Having been a regular at Arkwrights for some time now I have to say that it's definitely one the best chippies I have come across in Leeds.
I don't think it requires a fantastically detailed review, when all I really need to say is they do a mean chip supper. The chips are big and chunky, they sell dandelion and burdock (near essential in a chippy) and they have a generous hand with the scraps and some top-notch mushy peas!
I can almost smell the vinegar just writing this..... -

After going to an event in the city the other night, I pretty much only had time to shoom straight home and grab a cup of tea before going to the Chemic pub quiz. I was starting to get concerned as I'd not eaten anything properly and then it hit me. Boom. Arkwrights. Perfect!
We pulled up to the Chemic at about three minutes to nine and I went straight over to Arkwrights to grab some chips and whatever else I could nom. The chap was clearly about to close and the shelves were practically empty. Nevertheless, he was an absolute gem. He came and greeted me, explained what they had left and was really friendly as I ummed and ahhed over which extra bit I was going to have to substantiate my chips. I'm so ruddy indecisive!
I opted for a sausage with chips and he kindly offered a load of batter scraps to go with my chips. Yum! I realise they're not in the slightest bit healthy, but when in Rome, an' that. Topped of with ketchup, salt and vinegar I hauled my delicious dinner into the pub - yup, they're totally cool with that! And then I promptly stuffed them all down. Just. What. I needed.
Chips were great, and the sausage was lovely. Not gourmet, but a bloody good portion of chips and sausage for about three quid. Yeah! -

Arkwrights is delicious. It is the kind of place that makes your mouth water as you walk past (whether you have been in the pub next door or not). So many places in Leeds sell fish and chips and so many commit a big massive FAIL. Not Arkwrights though, they know exactly what they're doing. The fish is really tasty and the batter is not at all soggy, the chips are gorgeous, a little bit crispy on the outside and warm and soft on the inside (cue stomach growling) and the curry sauce is so flavorsome and more-ish it'll leave you licking your paper wrapper.
Although they do close quite early, the pub next door allows you to bring your purchase inside so you can have it with a pint! Sorted. -

I called into Arkwrights on my way home on Friday afternoon.I have passed this chippy many times and decided to give them a try.I ordered a large haddock and chips with scraps and waited whilst the fish was being cooked.I was charged £6.25p.On leaving the shop i looked at the price list in the window and saw that the price for a jumbo fish and chips were priced at £6.00.The fish that i had been given could not be described as jumbo size,it was an average sized large fish.I can only assume that the extra charge of 25p was for the few scraps that i was given.
On eating i found the meal to be tasty and well cooked. Arkwrights may appear to be a good chippy to some but falls far short of the majority of it's rivals for value for money. This is an average chippy who are charging high prices compared with other fish and chip shops in Leeds.

One of the main reasons for the popularity of this fish and chip shop is its proximity to the Chemic and the latter's refusal to become any sort of foodie pub, prompting peckish drinkers to stumble next door on a regular basis for some battered cod and chunks of deep fried potato. While a little pricier than your average takeaway, the combination of crisp batter, flaky fish and chunky chips soaks up the booze a treat and won't leave you feeling terrible the next day - unlike that donner kebab.
